Can Dogs Eat Tomatoes?

Ever wondered if dogs can eat tomatoes?

There is a fair bit of conflicting information about whether tomatoes are a healthy addition to a dog's diet. Lets get one thing straight. Dogs CAN eat tomatoes but they should not be fed unripe tomatoes or the green leafy stalks which are on some raw tomatoes. If your dog gets his paws on these it could be poisonous.

Ripe tomatoes are full of anti-oxidants which are brilliant for your dog's immune system.

Lycopene is the ingredient in tomatoes which gives them their beautiful red colour. Lycopene may help to lower blood pressure so feeding your dog tomatoes will be good for their heart too.

Tomatoes are chock full of Vitamin C. Unlike humans, dogs make their own Vitamin C however sometimes your dog may need a little extra Vitamin C. This is especially true of dogs that suffer from allergies. For these dogs, you can boost their immune system with a daily dose of tomatoes.

Finally tomatoes are a great source of fibre so great for your dog's digestive system.

So go ahead and give your dog a raw tomato today. But make sure it's perfectly ripe and all the green bits (stalk and leaves) are removed. Steer clear of tinned varieties as these may have added sugars and salt.
