How to Calm Your Dog During Fireworks
Here's a natural approach to keeping your dog calm and safe
We all love a good fireworks display but for many of our dogs, it’s one of the scariest times of the year. Those sudden bangs, flashes, and rumbles can turn a relaxing evening into a stressful ordeal for both dog and owner. If your dog shakes, hides, pants or just looks utterly miserable during fireworks, you’re not alone and we’re here to help.
🌿 Our Natural Fireworks Special Pack
We created our Fireworks Special Pack to support dogs who find fireworks season hard to handle. It’s a gentle, non-sedating, natural way to help your dog stay calm—before, during, and after the noise.
Inside the pack, you’ll find:
- Noise Remedy: Homeopathic tablets to take three times a day in the lead-up to fireworks season—or every 30 minutes during a noisy evening.
- Calm Xtra: Herbal drops made from ingredients like Valerian and Passionflower. These can work in as little as 20 minutes and help to calm your dog naturally without knocking them out.
We’ve used this combination with our own dogs for years, and we’ve heard so many lovely success stories from customers who say their dogs are finally able to relax even with fireworks going off outside.
Why Dogs Get Scared of Fireworks
Dogs don’t understand what fireworks are—they just hear loud, unpredictable bangs and feel vibrations they can’t escape. It’s not uncommon for dogs to:
- Shake or hide
- Bark or whine
- Refuse to eat
- Try to escape
- Cling to you or run away from you
This is all totally normal behaviour when a dog feels frightened. The good news is, there’s a lot we can do to help.
Our Top Tips for Calming Your Dog During Fireworks
1. Start Sooner Than You Think
The earlier you prepare, the better. Start giving Noise Remedy tablets around 2 weeks before fireworks season begins. This helps take the edge off and makes your dog less sensitive to sudden noises.
As you get closer to the big nights, Calm Xtra can be used up to three times a day. We recommend giving it around 20–30 minutes before it starts getting noisy. Bear in mind that it can make your dog sleepy!
2. Create a Safe, Cosy Hideaway
Most dogs feel more secure when they have somewhere quiet and enclosed to retreat to. Choose a room away from windows and:
- Draw the curtains
- Put on a radio or TV to muffle outside sounds
- Add blankets, bedding and a favourite toy
- Stay nearby, but let your dog choose where they want to be
3. Keep Things Calm and Reassuring
It’s tempting to over-comfort a worried dog, but often just being calm and nearby is enough. Talk to them gently, stroke them if they come to you, and try to act as relaxed as possible. Dogs pick up on our mood, so the calmer you are, the more they’ll feel at ease.
4. Feed, Walk and Play Early
Try to get walks and mealtimes done well before dark. A bit of exercise and a full tummy can help your dog feel more settled as the evening begins. And if they’re a bit tired, all the better!
5. Offer a Distraction
A long-lasting chew or a toy stuffed with treats can help shift your dog’s focus. Licking and chewing are soothing activities for dogs—like a cup of tea for us!
