Homeopathic Remedies for Dogs: How They Work & Common Myths

If you've started looking into gentler, more natural options for your dog's wellbeing, you've probably come across homeopathy. It's a popular choice among pet owners who want to explore complementary approaches alongside conventional veterinary care - but it's also one of the most misunderstood.

In this guide, we'll break down what homeopathy actually is, how remedies are chosen and dosed, and clear up some of the most common myths that trip up even experienced pet owners.

What Is Homeopathy?

Homeopathy is a system of complementary medicine developed over 200 years ago, based on the principle of 'like cures like' - the idea that a substance which causes symptoms in a healthy individual can, in a highly diluted form, help address similar symptoms in someone who is unwell. Remedies are prepared through a process of serial dilution and succussion (vigorous shaking), which practitioners refer to as 'potentisation.'

Homeopathy is considered a complementary therapy, not a substitute for veterinary medicine. Many pet owners nonetheless choose to use homeopathic remedies as part of a broader wellness routine or to tackle specific behavioural issues, like anxiety or aggression.

How Are Homeopathic Remedies Dosed for Dogs?

One of the most surprising things for new users is this: the dose isn't based on your dog's size or weight. A Chihuahua and a Great Dane would typically receive the same number of tablets of a given remedy.

This is because homeopathic dosing works differently from conventional medicine. In conventional pharmacology, dose is usually tied to body weight because it's about delivering a specific concentration of an active ingredient into the bloodstream. Homeopathy doesn't work on that concentration-based model. Instead, practitioners distinguish between two separate concepts:

Potency - how the remedy was prepared (i.e., how many times it was diluted and shaken). This is written as numbers and letters on the label, such as 6C or 30C.

Frequency - how often the remedy is given, such as once daily or every few hours.

Because the 'strength' of a homeopathic remedy is determined by its potency rather than the quantity given, a single tablet is generally considered to deliver the same 'dose' whether it's given to a 3kg dog or a 40kg dog.

Giving more tablets at once doesn’t make the remedy stronger - it's the potency and frequency that are adjusted, not the tablet count.

Common Myths About Homeopathy for Dogs

There's a lot of confusion out there about how to actually use homeopathic remedies. Here are some of the most common myths - and what you really need to know.

Myth: Homeopathy can't be given with food

Fact: Ideally, homeopathic remedies are given on a clean tongue, around 30 minutes away from food, since strong flavours and residues can interfere with how the remedy is taken up. But dogs don't always make that easy. If needed, you can give the remedy with a small amount of something bland - a little milk, plain yoghurt, or butter - just avoid mixing it into your dog’s full meal.

Myth: If you touch a homeopathic tablet, it's ruined

Fact: With many homeopathic tablets, the preparation sits on the surface, so it's best handled as little as possible. But a brief touch doesn't mean the tablet needs to be thrown away. Tip it into the lid, or use a clean spoon where possible, and avoid holding it in a hot or sweaty hand for too long.

Myth: Homeopathy must only use one remedy at a time

Fact: Classical homeopathy usually works with one carefully selected remedy at a time. Combination homeopathy, on the other hand, brings several compatible remedies together in a single formulation. If you're considering using multiple separate remedies or products together, it's best to check with us first, as some combinations may not be recommended.

Myth: Giving more tablets makes a remedy stronger

Fact: More tablets doesn't mean a stronger effect. As covered above, potency (how the remedy was prepared) and frequency (how often it's given) are the two variables that matter - not the number of tablets in one sitting.

Counter-intuitively, a 'higher potency' in homeopathy actually means a more dilute preparation, not a more concentrated one. Always follow the instructions on the product rather than giving extra tablets.

The takeaway:

Homeopathy comes with its own set of rules and terminology that can feel unfamiliar at first - but once you understand the basics, it doesn't need to be complicated. The two biggest things to remember: dosing isn't based on your dog's size, and more tablets doesn't equal a stronger remedy.

FAQs

1. Does my large dog need a bigger dose of homeopathy?

No. Unlike conventional medication, homeopathic dosing isn't based on body weight. The same number of tablets is typically given regardless of whether your dog is a small breed or a giant breed.

2. Can I give my dog homeopathic remedies alongside conventional medication?

Many owners do use homeopathy alongside conventional veterinary treatment. Homeopathy is generally considered very safe to use with no contra-indications but if you are concerned then do check with your vet first.

3. How long does it take to see results from a homeopathic remedy?

This varies depending on the remedy, the potency used, and what it's being used for. Some owners report noticing changes within days, while other cases may take a few weeks. If you're not seeing any improvement after that, or if things seem to have gone ‘backwards’, these can be useful clues about what might work better for your dog. Bear in mind that with some homeopathy, things can get worse before they get better. The deterioration normally only lasts a few days and then you can start  to see the improvement. Get in touch and we’ll be happy to advise you further.

4. Is homeopathy safe for puppies or senior dogs?

Homeopathy is considered very safe to use and very gentle.

5. What's the difference between classical and combination homeopathy?

Classical homeopathy uses one carefully chosen remedy at a time, matched closely to the individual dog's symptoms. Combination homeopathy blends several compatible remedies into one product, often aimed at a broader set of symptoms. Neither is inherently 'better' - it depends on the situation and owner preference.
